The shadow
knitting , also called "illusion" knitting, consists of
knitting 2-color stripes
contrasting, either in garter stitch or in stockinette stitch .
Seen from above we
only sees the stripses.
When
you tilt the work, it is the raised garter stitch that will hide the
rows of stockinette stitch. The colors stand out clearly, the design
gives the “illusion” of a jacquard.
FOR THE COMPUTER:
Two rows in stockinet stitch is:
1 : stockinette stitch right side = one
white line (non-perforated),
2 : stockinette stitch on the right side = a white line (not perforated),

The garter stitch is:
1 : knit on the right side = one
white line (non-perforated),
2 : purl on the wrong side = a black line (perforated)

To create this pattern
"illusion" , in each area of the pattern we alternate
1 - 2 : garter stitch in white
3 - 4 : stockinet stitch in red,
there will be 1 selected line (black boxes, or
perforations) every 4 rows for the pair of rows .

Color inversion
relief :
To highlight a color, select it in garter stitch.
So on the same row, we will have raised garter stitch and flat stockinet stitch for the background.
The pattern is done on 4 rows, the selections complement each other.

The pattern being based on stripes

HOW
CREATE a pattern?
We'll have to
create
a pattern where for each stripe of two rows we indicate to the computer if it knits knit or purl stitches.
Let's take the example of the red and white checkerboard, based on a 24-mesh punched card, centering the pattern:
1- On the design sheet, mark the stripes,
as they will be in the work: red/white/red/white |
2 - let's draw
our pattern starting with white, just darken
the boxes on the second white line:
